It is free... and you want updates too?
Probably.
Automatic checking
The Windows Layout Manager will check for updates when you start it up (in a background thread so it doesn't cause any delays) if you have the Check for newer version on startup enabled in the Configuration.
Manual checking
You can also manually check for a new version. From the Layout Manager's use the menu item Help > Check For Updates.
If a newer version has been found
You will be prompted by a dialog saying:
A new version (x.x.x.x) has been found. Do you wish to visit the web site to download it?
From that point on it's entirely up to you whether to ignore it or go to the website to download the newer version. I would recommend downloading a newer version if it becomes available because it will probably include fixed for existing bugs, maybe new features, and most certainly new bugs too.
You do not trust applications checking for newer versions?
Good for you! You shouldn't always trust applications that transfer bits over the internet. I guarantee you, though, that no data gets transferred to the web site. All the application does is check the latest version. You can check it with a packet sniffer if you want to verify that. But in general it's good to be wary of applications that transfer data. If you really want to keep up to date without any of this you can always check the web site, old school style.
