The New Place: Early Results

September 22, 2011 by Stefan Didak 11 Comments

It’s true, I haven’t been posting much. Then again, I have been rather busy with that thing called “life” and in particular the move to the new place. But things are starting to slowly shape up. The emphasis here is on the word SLOWLY. Things are not going as fast as I had hoped for. So, no, no new office pictures, won’t be any for a while, it’s going to take some more time. But, in the meantime, I can show you some of the current progress. Pictures taken with the shaky camera of the iPhone.

Those are pictures of the same office. If you see something that looks like it had been modified, it wasn’t, it’s just that the office is really big and has more than one work area. So, definitely, lots and lots of desk space for… lots and lots of workstations, servers, monitors, and a few Mac’s thrown in for good measure. Oh, yeah, about them Mac’s. Going to the Apple Store in Emeryville was a major disappointment. They didn’t have anything I wanted, didn’t have anything I needed, and the result was “best to just order it online from us”. Yeah, that could’ve saved me an hour’s drive from Oakley (not Oakland!) to Emeryville. Why those stores even exist, I have no idea. It was very busy, but people there were clueless. And with people I mean the staff, not the potential customers in the store. I bet those had more of a clue.

The big battery backup stuff still has to arrive and I am still waiting for a quote on some systems from my potentially new hardware builder out here in this area. Until that time I will allow the wires and the office to be a mess. I might allow it to be a mess until the new office and the old office get reunited in the same place. Depends on how things go. We’ll see. The 30″ Dell U3011 monitors arrived, though. Wow, real nice. Zero dead or bright pixels. Lots of screen realestate to use. Now if only I had some machines that would make use of all those pixels!!

You are 100% correct about Apple Store Employees, here at my local one in the UK, it took them 25 minutes to work out that they didn’t have the Mac Pro I needed, and I was asking for a standard configuration, or any cases for my 11″ Air (this was right when they first came out) – The store was full of people, but its very geared towards consumer equipment – Some of them don’t even have Apples own Pro Apps on the shelves (Just Logic now – but still ridiculous). Totally and utterly hopeless – I got sent away to order online as well, major nightmare, on the plus side it meant I could also throw in a few extras with my order, but still a waste of 48 hours. Trust me, your experience is far from unusual at Apple Stores these days.

    Stefan,

Can’t wait to see how this build goes. Just to kickoff the first question, what are the make / model of the desks you are using there. I’m looking for a new corner unit myself and these look pretty nice.

The desks are Ikea Galant desks. There’s two Galant corner desks, two 80x60cm extension tops, two 60cm half round extension tops, one quarter round extension top, and two 120x80cm regular Galant desks. Oh, and some of those desktop shelves for good measure.

Why not get rid of the horrid carpet?

What’s horrid about the carpet? Sure, it’s not black but my experience with black carpet is that it’s too much a pain in the ass to keep cleaning every few days because it shows everything. The current carpet is brand new high pile stuff. Got it throughout the house.

I would have thought you would go with hardwood or laminate, but didnt realize you had this installed brand new as the color looks pretty old

It’s easier to keep dust out of the systems with carpet. On wood/hard floors dust keeps moving around but carpet traps the dust. 🙂

Excellent reason unless you like to clean the floor daily !

How are the Galant desks working out for you? With the steel supports under the top, they look like they should hold up.

Have you had a chance to mount your ergotrons to it yet?

The Galant’s are working out quite nicely. Stable enough and deep enough too. But I haven’t done anything with the Ergotron’s yet. All that stuff of Office 6.0 is still in Holland and I need to have it shipped over… things are slow in getting up and running here.
